This ambitious non-profit project grew out of an identified community need for providing both shelter and peer-led substance use services to homeless individuals in Wake County, N.C. in 1999 and opened in 2001. Based on a social recovery model in Louisville, KY, the original 165-bed facility for men was later expanded into 185 beds followed by a separate 100-bed facility for women, created five years later. This institution has enjoyed record positive long-term recovery rates at a cost significantly lower than jails and hospitals and most importantly full services have been provided free of charge to every client for over 20 years.
